Before comparing an NPR, NPR-HD, NPR-XD, NQR or NRR, document what the truck will actually do.

  • What products will you carry?
  • What is the required temperature for each product?
  • What is the heaviest load you expect on a typical route?
  • How much cargo space or how many pallet positions do you need?
  • How many deliveries will the truck make per day?

What Size Refrigerated Truck Do You Need?

Refrigerated trucks are commonly described by body length, vehicle class or market terms such as cube reefer, 5-ton reefer truck and refrigerated straight truck. Those descriptions are useful starting points, but none of them tells you the truck's actual cargo capacity on its own.

Compare the Isuzu N-Series by GVWR

The Isuzu N-Series covers several weight classes and body-length ranges. Current Canadian specifications extend from a 12,000-lb GVWR NPR Gas to a 19,500-lb GVWR NRR. Depending on the model, wheelbase and cab, an N-Series chassis can accommodate bodies from approximately 10 to 24 feet.

GVWR Is Not Cargo Payload

GVWR is the maximum permitted operating weight of the completed truck. It includes:

  • The chassis and cab
  • The insulated body
  • The refrigeration unit
  • Fuel and other fluids
  • The driver and passengers
  • A ramp, liftgate, shelving or other equipment
  • The cargo

The chassis manufacturer's body-payload allowance is also not the finished refrigerated truck's cargo payload. The body, refrigeration unit and installed equipment still have to be deducted.

A simplified calculation is:

Usable cargo payload = GVWR − completed vehicle weight − occupants and carried equipment

For example, if a completed refrigerated truck has a 19,500-lb GVWR and weighs 12,000 lb with its body, refrigeration system, fuel and installed equipment, approximately 7,500 lb remains for the driver, passengers, loose equipment and cargo. The truck must also remain within its individual front and rear axle ratings.

What to Ask For: Always ask for the completed vehicle weight and certified payload rather than relying on the chassis rating alone.

What Does “5-Ton Reefer Truck” Mean?

Businesses searching for a 5-ton reefer truck for sale are often looking for a medium-duty refrigerated straight truck. However, “5-ton” is commonly used as a market description and should not be treated as a guaranteed 10,000-lb cargo payload.

The finished payload can change substantially based on:

  • Body length and construction
  • Insulation thickness
  • Refrigeration-unit size
  • Fuel and electric-standby equipment
  • Liftgate or walk-ramp
  • Shelving, bulkheads and interior partitions
  • Cab and wheelbase selection

Use the term to identify the general truck category, then verify the completed payload for the actual configuration.

Cube Reefer, Box Truck and Straight Truck: What Is the Difference?

A refrigerated box truck or reefer box truck has an enclosed, insulated cargo body with a refrigeration system. “Cube truck” is another common description for a truck with a box-shaped cargo body.

“Straight truck” describes the vehicle configuration: the cab, chassis and cargo body form one vehicle. It is different from a tractor pulling a separate refrigerated trailer.

The body must also leave enough space for cold air to circulate around the load. Filling every available inch can restrict airflow and create inconsistent temperatures within the cargo area.

Match the Refrigeration System to the Cargo

The Isuzu chassis determines the truck's weight capacity, powertrain and body-length compatibility. The insulated body and refrigeration unit determine whether the completed truck is suitable for chilled or frozen cargo.

That distinction is important when comparing refrigerated reefer trucks. Two trucks on the same N-Series chassis can have very different temperature capabilities.

Refrigerated Versus Frozen Products

Canadian food-safety guidance identifies 4°C to 60°C as the temperature danger zone in which bacteria can grow quickly. Cold food should generally be kept at or below 4°C. Fresh Produce Requires More Than a Cold Box

Engine-Driven, Stand-Alone and Electric-Standby Refrigeration

The refrigeration unit's power source affects how the truck fits the route.

Engine-driven refrigeration uses power associated with the truck's engine. It can be appropriate for routes where the engine operates consistently, but buyers should confirm what happens to cooling performance during extended stops or when the engine is shut down.

Stand-alone refrigeration uses a separate power source for the refrigeration unit. It can provide more independence from the truck's engine and may be valuable for demanding routes or extended stops.

Electric standby allows a compatible refrigeration unit to operate from an external electrical supply while the truck is parked. This can support pre-cooling and help maintain temperature during loading, overnight staging or periods when running an engine is undesirable.

Before Choosing a System: Ask the upfitter to explain the operating cost, maintenance requirements, electrical needs and cooling performance of each option under your expected duty cycle.

Choose the Right N-Series Chassis

Once the body size, payload and temperature requirements are understood, the next step is selecting the chassis and drivetrain.

Gas or Diesel?

Current Isuzu N-Series gas models use a 6.6-litre V8 rated at 350 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque. Depending on the model, they use either an eight-speed automatic transmission or an Allison six-speed automatic.

Current N-Series diesel models use a 5.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 215 hp and 452 lb-ft of torque, paired with an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission.
